Alune Wade is back for a U.S. tour celebrating his latest album “Sultan” (released in May 2022, ENJA records), a musical journey between West Africa and North Africa, which stretches languorously until East Africa and Ethiopia.
Since his first solo album, “Mbolo”, released in 2006, Wade has continued to weave an intuitive jazz framework. Bassist, author, composer, performer and producer, with Aziz Sahmaoui, he formed the group University of Gnawa in 2010, with which he explored the secrets of the Gnawa trance on all the major stages of the world. The two musicians are among those who have played with Joe Zawinul and participated in the musical miscegenation dear to the Viennese keyboardist and pianist.
In 2015, Wade participated in Marcus Miller’s album “Afrodeezia” (Blue Note) and recorded with Cuban pianist Harold López-Nussa, “Havana-Paris-Dakar” (World Village/Harmonia Mundi). The soundtrack, recorded in Havana, testifies to their common vision and the inspiration drawn from each city. In 2018, he produced “African Fast Food”, a fourth album – nominated for the African Music Awards – which already crosses languages, rhythms, jazz, afrobeat and folk, now surrounding himself with a range of musicians from many countries, each time creating a new musical space.
