About the Artist
Bob Sweet is a drummer and bandleader from Ann Arbor, who grew up in Detroit, steeped in and nurtured by the Motor City's rich, vast, and pervasive jazz, blues, rock, and soul cultures and traditions. He brings to his performances the universal spirit of creative improvisation epitomized by the legendary Creative Music Studio (CMS) in Woodstock New York, where he attended workshops from 1976 to the present. His CMS experience has brought him into performance and workshop settings with such luminaries of creative music as Jack DeJohnette, Dave Holland, the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Carla Bley, Wadada Leo Smith, Ed Blackwell, Marilyn Crispell, Billy Martin, Karl Berger, Oliver Lake, Ra Kalam Bob Moses, and many others. He's performed in large ensembles such as Roy Brooks' Aboriginal Percussion Choir and Karl Berger's Creative Improvisers Orchestra. He's also played in countless small groups with some of southeast Michigan's finest, including Faruq Z. Bey, RJ Spangler, Sun Messengers, Ron Brooks, Tad Weed, Gary Schunk, and the quartet featured tonight: Max Bowen (guitar), Andrew Bishop (saxophone), and Kurt Krahnke (bass).
