The Blue LLama Jazz Club and the Michigan Theater are joining forces to bring a unique multimedia musical journey to Ann Arbor.
Join the Michigan Theater on Wednesday, January 11th at 7:30PM for a showing of the documentary Thelonious Monk: Straight, No Chaser – a 1998 film about the life of bebop pianist and composer Thelonious Monk. It is considered one of the premier jazz documentaries and this is a rare opportunity to see it on the big screen!
Then on Thursday, January 12th, continue the journey at Blue LLama Jazz Club for an incredible performance by a Thelonious Monk connoisseur – Rick Roe.

Rick Roe is a jazz pianist, composer, performer, and veteran musician of the southeastern Michigan music community. He has produced and co-produced ten recordings with original compositions and arranged jazz standards with some of the most accomplished jazz musicians in the world. He was a two-time semi-finalist in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition and winner of the Great American Jazz Piano Competition in the 1990s. His love of Thelonious Sphere Monkʼs music lead to his first recording titled Monkʼs Modern Music with bassist Rodney Whitaker and drummer Greg Hutchinson, which has become highly regarded among jazz lovers around the world. Rickʼs original music has also received deep appreciation from musicians and fans worldwide.
