The U-M Jazz Ambassadors is a highly selective jazz combo program that allows an ensemble of Michigan’s finest high school jazz players to work intensively with University of Michigan Department of Jazz and Contemporary Improvisation faculty and this year’s guest artist Ingrid Jensen. The U-M Jazz Ambassadors Summer Intensive aims to recruit exceptionally talented high school students to study jazz at SMTD and was made possible by a gift from donor and jazz enthusiast Donald S. Chisholm. The intensive is led by Jazz Department faculty member Ellen Rowe with additional faculty Marion Hayden, Andy Milne, Nate Winn and Andrew Bishop. Each year the Intensive hires a visiting Artistic Director to instruct, mentor, and perform with students to foster their growth and overall appreciation for jazz. World-renowned trumpeter and composer Ingrid Jensen is the guest director for 2023. The six days of intensive jazz training include improvisation, theory, jazz history, private lessons and ensemble coaching, and culminates in a final performance on Friday June 30th at 6pm at The Blue LLama Jazz Club.
