Ursula Walker and Buddy Budson, the 2020 Detroit Jazz Festival Legacy Artists, will perform standards and jazz classics, including jazz instrumentals with lyrics by Ursula and Buddy, with their sextet. Ursula has been a mainstay of the Detroit music world for 69 years. As a unique stylist of ballads, standards, and jazz, she gained national recognition from, and was invited to tour with, artists such as Count Basie and Tony Bennett. Buddy has been playing jazz piano around Detroit for 61 years. He is also a composer and arranger, and has toured and recorded with Buddy Rich, Earl Klugh, and the Four Tops.
The sextet also features 4 of the area’s finest musicians. Jeff Halsey is Professor of Jazz Performance at Bowling Green State in Ohio and has toured with many of the world’s jazz luminaries. One of the most sought-after drummers on Detroit’s jazz scene, Dave Taylor, teaches jazz percussion at Wayne State. Trumpeter Dwight Adams is one of the brightest stars on the Detroit jazz scene and has toured with Stevie Wonder for over 20 years. Saxophonist Keith Kaminski is not only in great demand on the Detroit jazz scene but has toured and recorded with Bob Seger, Betty Lavette, and Alberta Adams.
