Jonathan Barahal Taylor is a drummer and composer based in Hamtramck, MI. He is frequently heard leading or co-leading a diverse array of projects that range from the art rock band Saajtak to the creative music project Teiku, which interprets ancestral Jewish melodies, to his solo project for drums and electronics, Root Beneath Bones. His quartet featuring Detroit and Ann Arbor stalwarts Matt Endahl (piano), Jaribu Shahid (bass), and (TBA), performs dynamic original music that showcases each improvisor's vast musicianship. Their book also features lesser-heard works from the great composers of Black American Music, including Andrew Hill, Geri Allen, Hasaan Ibn-Ali, Joe Henderson, Carla Bley, and Charlie Haden.

Taylor has performed with some of the luminaries of Creative Music, including Wadada Leo Smith, Angelica Sanchez, John Lindberg, Jaribu Shahid, Tomeka Reid, Dave Liebman, and James Cornish, and played at The Jazz Gallery in New York, the Detroit Jazz Festival, the DC Jazz Festival, the Toronto Jazz Festival, and various locations throughout Japan, South Africa, and Europe. Tabla study with Sri Soumya Kanti Mukherjee, disciple of the late Chhotte Lal Misra of the Benares Gharana, is a central part of his practice.
