ABOUT SEAN:

Sean Dobbins got his start as sought-after Detroit area jazz sideman at a young age, when he would regularly play with Blue Note artist Louis Smith. As Sean’s Career progressed, he found himself the recipient of many awards and accolades including the “Woody Herman Jazz Award”, an award for outstanding musicianship, as well as the Louis Armstrong Scholarship. Due to Sean’s great talent both as a player and an educator, he has been the focus of countless news articles, jazz radio programs, and documentaries.

Sean’s sound can best be described as hard-driving, solid rhythm with refreshing melodic sensibility. Some of Sean’s influences include Art Blakey, Jeff Hamilton, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Ed Thigpen, Sonny Payne, as well as Detroit area greats Gerald Cleaver and the one and only Elvin Jones.

FROM SEAN:

All Lives Stand Up Initiative focuses on the current cultural climate in our society. With social media, world issues and daily lack of cultural understanding, we now live in a world that promotes divisiveness which negatively impacts our community. Being an educator and performer for many years, I have had the opportunity to teach and perform around the world and interact with people from vastly different backgrounds. I have concluded that we all have similar social challenges no matter where we come from, many of them leading to a divided community. In most cases, these involve mental health, race relations, and more. As an artist and educator, I understand that my role is to help solve these issues by bringing awareness and providing platforms for dialogue. I recently composed a Suite entitled All Lives Stand Up that focuses on diversity and inclusion, mental health, improving the line of communication between generations, and exploring ways to create a safer society for everyone. The goal of this project is to perform concerts at educational institutions and venues nationally and internationally as well as lead conversations aimed at healing the social and cultural divide in our societies.
