Based in Ann Arbor for 42 years, the Lunar Octet is a shining gem on the Michigan jazz scene, featuring original Latin Jazz that sparkles. From the first note of their new CD on Summit Records, "Convergence", you know that the band offers creative and original music that's fun to listen to. Their compositions involve rich arrangements and a strong focus on soloists to yield music that's exciting, dynamic, and powerful, including fiery Latin grooves, driving funk rhythms, swinging bop tunes, and romantic ballads.
The group won the WEMU-Depot Town Jazz Competition and has performed numerous live steams on Michigan radio stations, including WCBN, WEMU, and WDET. The band was the opening act on National Public Radio's national broadcast of the Montreux Detroit Jazz Festival.
Downbeat Magazine said that their new record "bursts with joy and authority. The group sounds fresh, and the compositions spur the impulse to dance and encourage intellectual engagement at the same time."
