Karim Gideon’s musical journey began in middle school after joining the school band and learning the trumpet at the age of 10. By the time he reached high school, Karim showed a growing interest in jazz music that caught the attention of Dr. Teddy Harris Jr., who was an accomplished musician, arranger, and educator.
Upon graduation, Karim enlisted in the United States Navy, and continued to work in the jazz scene wherever he was stationed. His military career took him from Tokyo, Dubai, Norfolk, and Afghanistan.
After receiving an honorable discharge from active duty, he pursued a degree in music at Wayne State University.
Karim has performed with Randy Weston, Sean Jones, Danilo Perez, Scott Gwinnell, Omar Sosa, OB Succari, Glen Hall, Bernie Koenig, and Detroit Jazz Factory. He is currently musical director of In the Tradition Jazz Ensemble under the Direction of Olujimi Tafatooa.
